How Tesla Owners Beat Rising Electricity Rates in Texas

Texas electricity rates just went up again. And Tesla owners who set this up two years ago are basically laughing.

Here's the play: Texas has some of the most dynamic electricity pricing in the country: TOU rates, meaning Time of Use. Power is cheap between midnight and 6am. Expensive during peak hours.

Tesla's Scheduled Charging lets you set a time window for charging. So instead of plugging in at 6pm when everyone gets home and the grid's slammed, you set it to charge from 1am to 5am. Cheapest electricity of the day.

In Dallas, the difference between on-peak and off-peak can be 3x the price per kilowatt hour. On a big battery like the Model S Long Range? You could be saving $30 to $50 a month just by charging at night.

And if you pair that with home solar and a Powerwall? You're charging from your own roof during the day and drawing from the wall only as a backup. Some people out here in Texas have basically zero charging costs.

That's not a flex. That's just math. Ok maybe a little flex.
